Brigadier Ian Caws was commissioned into the Royal Engineers in September 1976. Early tours included Berlin, Hong Kong and Hameln followed by Professional Engineer Training and 2 years working an Australian civil engineering company building roads in Brisbane and designing industrial buildings in Melbourne. His civil engineering career was then put on hold whilst he attended Staff College, commanded an armoured engineer squadron in Germany and filled staff posts in the MoD, HQ ARRC and HQ 1(UK) Div.
Command of 25 Engineer Regiment in Northern Ireland brought a welcome return to a wide range of construction tasks, some of which had to be taken down again following the IRA ceasefire! Two years planning worldwide military operations in DMO’s team in the MoD were then followed by the chance to participate himself whilst CRE in HQ 3 (UK) Div, with tours as Chief Engineer in HQ KFOR, and as Chief Engineer HQ ISAF. On promotion to Brigadier in 2002, he took up his final post in the Army as Director of the Army Infrastructure Organisation, leaving in 2005 to take up the post of Bursar at the Dragon School in Oxford. He stepped down from the Dragon in October 2016 and took up the post of Director of Operations for Cobseo – the Confederation of Service Charities – in March 2017.
